A crown is used to cover or ‘cap’ a damaged tooth or to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and we often recommend them for back teeth.
We recommend crowns to:
• Replace a large filling when there is insufficient tooth remaining
• Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
• Restore a fractured tooth
• Cover a dental implant
• Cover a tooth that has been root treated
A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It spans the space where the teeth are missing and is cemented to the teeth or implants on either side of the space. There is a choice of materials for bridges and we will help you to decide which material is best, based on the location of the missing teeth, their function and how you want them to look.
Crowns and bridges are made by external dental laboratories. We only use laboratories that we know meet our exacting standards of quality and care. One technician we frequently use, Mark Trowell, (www.superiordentalceramics.com) was runner-up in the Great Britain Mastertech competition, having won the regional final.
We now have fantastic materials that allow us to fill and restore teeth, without the need for a crown or veneer. With the new techniques, we can build up your tooth by bonding the filling material to it. We don’t have to drill away any remaining tooth which is necessary before we fit a crown or veneer. This ‘composite’ filling, is a more cost-effective treatment and preserves your natural tooth.
